Northern Territory AMA Elects New President
For the first time in living memory the AMA in the Northern Territory has required a ballot to determine its President.
Two very experienced candidates were vying for the position and each lobbied very strongly. Almost half of the membership voted.
In announcing the successful candidate, Dr Paul Bauert, Paediatrician from Royal Darwin Hospital, the outgoing President Dr Peter Beaumont congratulated both candidates on their campaigns and noted that such healthy competition was a clear demonstration how important the AMA is for the people and doctors of the Northern Territory.
The voting margin was only two votes and the meeting unanimously appointed the second candidate, Associate Professor Robert Parker as Vice President along with Dr Stephen Brady of Alice Springs and Dr Barbara Bauert from Darwin.
Dr Jennifer Mitchell continues in the role of Treasurer while Dr David Chapman retains the position of Secretary.
Dr Paul Bauert said at the meeting that there were currently many opportunities to deliver improved outcomes for all Northern Territory members and their patients.
